This booklet contains a brief description of the well-known BALL TRANSMISSION GEAR for AUTOMOBILES and REVERSE GEAR for MOTOR BOATS.
This Gear has become exceedingly popular wherever a first-class Gear is desired.
We are one of the oldest Gear manufacturing concerns in the country, and therefore have the advantage, being the result of long experience in this special line of manufacture.
Although the earlier Gears met with most gratifying success, it has been our constant aim to greatly improve the Gear each season.
While our Gears have always maintained their original and distinctive characteristics, changes have been made from time to time, as experience has shown necessary or desirable to produce a still better gear.
THE BALL TRANSMISSION for AUTOMOBILES contains all SPUR GEARS, HARDENED, BRONZED BUSHED, and mounted on hardened steel studs.
Without question our Gear requires the least knowledge and forethought on the part of the driver of all known speed change Gears.
The Gear is very simple and is contained in an oil-tight case filled with special soft grease.
Our Gears run just as smooth and noiseless on the slow speed forward as on the high speed, where no gears are in operation.
The Gear can be coupled or connected direct on engine shaft, and are also furnished for Bevel Gear Drive, in which case we make the sleeve long, so that same can be run in a Bearing and have room for a bevel gear or universal joint.
The power should be transmitted from Motor to shaft of Transmission and then drive from the sleeve of Gear to back Axle.
Two Speeds forward
and a Reverse
The ratio on the slow speed forward is 1 rev. to 2 1/2 rev. of Motor, and on the reverse 1 rev. to 6 rev of Motor.
The Gear case must always be kept full of soft grease.
No. 1 Gear will transmit 5 Brake horse power, and is designed for light Runabouts weighing 600 lbs.
No. 3 Gear will transmit 24 Brake horse power, and is designed for Touring Cars and Delivery Wagons weighing 2,400 lbs.
No. 4 Gear is designed for Heavy Cars, Delivery Wagons and Trucks.
When assembling the Gears, be sure and have the marks (1) thus on the triple Gears point toward the center of shaft.
OUR BOAT GEAR gives one speed forward and a reverse, and contains all spur gears cut from steel blanks, and hardened.

The reverse speed is one fourth slower than the forward speed.

The Gear is furnished with Brake Band Brass Collar and Shifting Lever.

We make Gears to order, up to any horse power.

We have the simplest and most satisfactory Gear on the market, and has been adopted by the best engine builders in this country.

When ordering, Give Diameter of Engine Shaft.
The hub end of Gear is bored to fit, and couples direct on engine shaft.
The shaft end of Gear couples to propeller shaft.
The brake band must be supported on each side, and screws for holding down by the lugs must be left about one-sixteenth inch slack to allow side play, so that the band can tighten completely around the drum when reversing.
To adjust the clutch, take out the set-screw and lock-nut on the spider that carries the three dogs, and screw the spider on the sleeve sufficient to make clutch hold and so the cone can be thrown in with moderate pressure; then replace the set-crew so the point enters one of the grooves provided in the sleeve, medium tight. The Gear case must always be kept well supplied with soft grease, and outside working parts oiled enough to prevent parts rusting fast. In cases of heavy work, a thrust bearing is necessary on propeller shaft working both ways.
All Gears are shipped filled with grease ready for use.
Dimensions of Reverse Gears for Motor Boats
(chart)
BY SHIFTING the lever aft, the band is tightened, which gives the reverse speed, and by shifting the leaver forward the brake band is released, and at the same time it throws in the cone which gives the speed ahead or direct drive, with no gears in operation. By shifting the lever so that it is straight, it releases the band and throws out the cone, and then the motor runs without moving the boat.
No. 1 Gear will transmit 5 horse power running at 500 revolutions, and 10 horse power running at 1,000 revolutions.
No. 2 Gear will transmit 8 horse power running 500, and 16 horse power running 1,000 revolutions.
No. 3 Gear will transmit 12 horse power running 500, and 25 horse power running 1,000 revolutions.
No. 4 Gear will transmit 16 horse power running 500, and 32 horse power at 1,000 revolutions.

This pump is made of Bronze and is non-corrosive. All bearings are lined with anti-friction metal, gears and shaft are of bronze, made in one piece; no keys or pins to get loose.
